- Dre Erwin | Clinical Advocacy & Northern Health Infrastructure
Learn about Dre Erwin's northern nursing advocacy, emergency equipment projects and work to support healthcare in Sandy Bay and northern Saskatchewan. Advancing Northern Healthcare: Clinical Advocacy & Leadership As a Registered Nurse with Advanced Authorized Practice (RN-AAP), I am dedicated to bridging the critical gap between clinical medicine and community wellness. My work in Sandy Bay and across Northern Saskatchewan focuses on infrastructure advocacy, enhancing emergency readiness, and implementing patient-safety protocols in remote nursing stations. Read more about my professional journey and current initiatives in Northern Saskatchewan here. This page outlines my best-practice methodology for procuring life-saving equipment and managing high-acuity care in underserved regions. Clinical Methodology: The "Advocate-Innovator" Framework Successful procurement of emergency infrastructure relies on a three-phase, evidence-based approach: Data-Driven Identification: Moving beyond "wanting" equipment to proving "clinical necessity" through risk mapping and outcome analysis. Strategic Advocacy & Grant Alignment: Framing requests through the lens of patient safety and staff support, aligning with provincial funding objectives. Integration & Sustainability: Ensuring that new technology is supported by updated facility protocols and ongoing staff competency training. Evidence of Impact: Metrics & Outcomes To ensure accountability and transparency, all clinical interventions are measured by their impact on patient care and facility readiness. Emergency Response Readiness: Following the integration of new diagnostic and life-support infrastructure, facility readiness metrics for high-acuity events—such as cardiac arrests and trauma stabilization—have shown marked improvement in standardized simulation testing. Staff Competency & Safety: The introduction of standardized protocols for the LUCAS device and active warming systems has directly contributed to increased staff confidence when managing high-acuity patients in isolated environments. Community-Clinic Synergy: By bridging clinical equipment needs with community-led wellness initiatives (such as youth mentorship), we have observed a more cohesive approach to addressing the social determinants of health alongside acute medical care. Download: Northern Clinical Advocacy Methodology (PDF) Professional References & Strategic Partnerships Clinical Standards: All infrastructure procurement and protocol integrations are aligned with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) Clinical Practice Guidelines and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) Best Practice Guidelines for critical care. Grant & Foundation Partners : * Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation: Primary funding partner for emergency medical equipment. Embracing Life Initiative: Strategic partner in community wellness and suicide prevention programming. Professional Accreditation: All initiatives are documented and reviewed according to the scope of practice for a Registered Nurse with Advanced Authorized Practice (RN-AAP) as defined by the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association (SRNA). Compliance: Documentation regarding clinical outcomes and safety protocols is managed in strict accordance with HIPA (Health Information Protection Act) standards to ensure full patient confidentiality. ### Insights from the Field Clinical advocacy is a continuous process. I share regular reflections on the realities of Northern nursing, the challenges of remote emergency care, and the projects currently underway in Sandy Bay. La Loche, Sask. volleyball player pursues dream all the way to NAIG “I try to use photography to try to help people who may have also had the same kind of pain as me,” Erwin said. “Photography saved my life.” One day Erwin brought along a high school student Jonah Natomagan, who had been inspired by Erwin’s work, and almost instantly they shared the same passion. “If I hadn’t gotten introduced to photography, I probably would’ve been with some of my peers, out doing drugs, drinking alcohol,” Jonah said. High school teacher Stephanie Sonnenburg said she’s noticed a big difference in the students involved in the club. “Photography allows the kids to find an outlet for some of their feelings and emotions,” Sonnenburg said. A report on high suicide rates was released by Saskatchewan children’s advocate Corey O’Soup on Tuesday and highlighted the importance of youth having their voices heard in their communities. “Their calls to action is to people in their everyday life — their parents, their peers, the youth, their families, the community – people who can impact them daily,” O’Soup said Tuesday in La Ronge. - Healing Through the Lens: Therapeutic Photography FAQs
Discover how Therapeutic Photography builds resilience. Get expert answers on the Pinehouse Photography Club, evidence-based methods, and visual anchors from RN-AAP and Veteran Dre Erwin in Saskatchewan. Frequently asked questions What is therapeutic photography? Therapeutic photography is the self-guided practice of using a camera and the act of taking photos to promote healing, self-discovery, and mental well-being. Unlike traditional therapy, it doesn't require a clinician; instead, it uses the "lens" as a tool to block out the "static" of trauma and focus on the present moment. At the Pinehouse Photography Club, we use this evidence-based approach to help youth and adults in Northern Saskatchewan externalize their emotions, build resilience, and find a "visual anchor" in times of stress. Read more about the science of resilience here Comment la photographie thérapeutique peut-elle contribuer au bien-être mental ? How has the Pinehouse Photography Club helped youth in the North? You’ll find that the Pinehouse Photography Club uses therapeutic photography to help youth in Northern Saskatchewan build coping skills, confidence, and a stronger sense of identity. Since launch, it has supported over 240 youth in finding their “visual anchor” through the lens. The work has also been featured by CBC, National Geographic, and Global News, and inspired the documentary A New Lens on Life! Who can benefit from therapeutic photography workshops? Therapeutic photography is a versatile tool designed for anyone navigating high-stress environments or emotional challenges. Our workshops specifically focus on: Youth: Helping young individuals in Northern Saskatchewan find a voice and build resilience through visual storytelling. Healthcare Professionals: As a practicing RN-AAP, I understand the weight of burnout. We use photography to help frontline workers "re-focus" and find moments of stillness. Veterans: Drawing on my own experience as a Canadian Armed Forces veteran, we use the lens to help process trauma and ground ourselves in the present. Indigenous Communities: Empowering youth to connect with their heritage and land through the art of capturing the Northern Lights. Whether you are struggling with mental health challenges or simply seeking a way to practice mindfulness, these workshops provide a "visual prescription" for healing. Click here to learn how to Start a Club in your community. What is the difference between Therapeutic Photography and Phototherapy? While both use images for healing, Therapeutic Photography is a self-directed or group practice used for self-exploration and building resilience (like the work we do in Pinehouse). Phototherapy is a formal clinical intervention guided by a trained mental health professional, often using personal or family albums to delve into deep trauma. Is therapeutic photography evidence-based? Yes. Our methods are grounded in established psychological research and the science of trauma recovery. We specifically cite the work of: Neil Gibson: We utilize his research on the "therapeutic potential of photography" to help individuals explore self-identity and build resilience. Bessel van der Kolk: Our approach incorporates the principles found in his groundbreaking work, The Body Keeps the Score, focusing on how visual and somatic practices help process trauma that words alone cannot reach. As a practicing Primary Care Nurse (RN-AAP) and veteran, I focus on 'externalizing' emotions—using the camera to put a feeling into a photograph so it can be managed and understood from a safe distance. - The Science of Therapeutic Photography | Dre Erwin Photography
Discover how therapeutic photography builds resilience and emotional well-being through evidence-based practices and visual anchors. Since 2016, the Pinehouse Photography Club has demonstrated that when youth are given a lens, they don't just see the world differently—they see themselves differently. Our results in youth engagement and mental health advocacy have been recognized at a national level. The Science Pillars 1 Externalizing the Narrative Research shows that by "objectifying" emotions through a lens, we can hold them at arm's length. This "externalization" allows participants to explore difficult feelings like anger or fear without being consumed by them. 2 The Bio-Psycho-Social Impact Our method addresses the whole person. By engaging the senses and focusing the mind, we interrupt racing thoughts and promote neural pathway development. This creates a "Helper’s High" that strengthens both the individual and their community. 3 From Identity to Empowerment Identity is fluid. For youth facing significant change, photography provides a way to assert a new identity—as a creator and a storyteller—shifting the focus from their struggles to their strengths. Our method follows the nested framework of the Socio-Ecological Model. Therapeutic photography doesn’t just improve the mindset of the Individual (Visual Anchor); it ripples outward. Club members share photos that create non-verbal Interpersonal support, while community-wide displays and partnerships with leaders and Elders strengthen Community connection and Cultural resilience. We aren't just taking photos; we are healing an ecosystem The Neuroscience of the Lens Neural Pathway Sculpting: Using the camera during the "critical neuroplasticity" phase of youth helps strengthen the prefrontal cortex, improving emotional regulation. Neurochemical Balance: Mindful photography helps transition the brain from a "survival state" (high cortisol/static) to a "focused state" (dopamine/serotonin), often called the "Helper's High." Memory Reconsolidation: Replacing negative "mental imagery" with positive "visual anchors" helps the brain reinterpret lived experiences through a lens of resilience. The Pinehouse Protocol (2016–2020) Lead Practitioner: Dre Erwin, RN-AAP Location: Pinehouse Program Type: Community-based therapeutic photography initiative Engagement: Approximately 200–300 youth daily (ages 6–13) Overview of Findings Within a rural and remote northern context, a community-based therapeutic photography program was implemented as a structured, strength-based engagement model for youth mental health and wellbeing. Routine self-reported mood measures (0–5 scale) indicated: Pre-session average mood: ~2.2 Post-session average mood: ~4.8 These shifts were consistently observed throughout the program period and reflected immediate improvements in self-reported emotional wellbeing following participation. Early Identification and Support Pathway In addition to mood changes, the program functioned as an informal early identification pathway. Within a non-clinical, land-based environment, youth were more likely to express emotional or psychosocial concerns indirectly through creative activity. When appropriate, concerns were supported through connection with local mental health resources, including social work and clinical care providers, forming a “warm hand-off” approach between community engagement and formal services. Interpretation The program suggests that structured creative engagement may support emotional expression, increase perceived wellbeing, and enhance early identification of youth experiencing distress in remote communities. Rather than functioning as a formal clinical intervention, this model reflects practice-based evidence from a community program operating in real-world conditions.
