- Samoyed in the Sky: Healing Story & Memorial Photography by Dre Erwin
Experience the extraordinary tale of our beloved Samoyed, resting under the Northern Lights at Pinehouse Lake. A miraculous story of farewell, burial on an island, and a celestial dance—a tribute to her enduring spirit and the wonders of nature's spectacle. Samoyed in the Aurora Borealis A Tale of Farewell, Burial, and Celestial Commemoration When our cherished Samoyed passed away at Pinehouse Lake, we honored her by laying her to rest on a serene island. That very night, the Northern Lights graced the sky, their radiant display seemingly embracing her spirit—a remarkable tribute to her presence and the magic she left behind. In the wake of this surreal encounter, Nikaya's celestial dance served as a poignant reminder—a testament to the miracles that grace our existence, often unnoticed amidst life's whirlwind. Meet Nikaya, a Samoyed husky Meet Nikaya, a Samoyed husky whose name embodies the essence of dawn snow. Nikaya wasn't just a pet; she was the sole remnant I carried away from a marriage, amid the weight of bills and house payments that lingered. Together, we ventured to Pinehouse Lake, where I pursued my passion for rural and remote nursing. Her presence became my solace in a new chapter, a steadfast companion amidst life's transitions. Pinehouse Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada Learn More 🐾 The Spirit of Nikaya: A Final Dance in the Northern Lights I. A Beacon of Light in the Shadows Wrapped within the layers of life's unpredictability, Nikaya arrived as a gift, a beautiful addition to my world. As the pages of a shared chapter turned, fate designated her the steadfast companion I carried forward from a separation. Amidst the debris of a past life, Nikaya emerged as my constant, a furry beacon of light in a shadowed landscape, holding hope in her gentle eyes. Together, we ventured to Pinehouse Lake, the vastness of nature embracing us. I embarked on my career in rural nursing, and Nikaya, with her playful spirit, became an integral part of my journey. She wasn't just a loyal friend; she was my confidante in times of solitude, my co-explorer of the northern wilderness, and a muse, inspiring me to delve into the art of therapeutic photography. II. The Shared Affliction In the turn of events that 2019 brought, our lives took an unexpected, silent turn. Nikaya's vibrant spirit began to wane, and I, too, felt the weight of lethargy creeping in. We were suffering from a shared affliction—a serious environmental exposure that stealthily invaded our living sanctuary and quickly deteriorated her health. Despite my vigilant efforts and seeking assistance, the damage was done. The situation was one of extreme gravity, leading to both myself and my partner requiring urgent, high-level medical intervention (including being rushed to Saskatoon and undergoing hyperbaric oxygen treatments). The systemic failures surrounding the safety of our accommodation were profound and life-altering. Her passing left a void that reverberated through the stillness of the lakeside. On the day she departed, we honored her by burying her on the island facing our home, a tranquil place for her spirit. "Life's miracles often unfold above us, in the dance of the stars and the wonder of the skies. When we look up, we invite the extraordinary into our world, for the universe rewards those who lift their gaze, ready to embrace the magic that awaits." III. The Celestial Journey That night, as grief lingered heavy in the air, I set up my camera, hoping to capture the silent poetry of the skies above the island. In the soft embrace of slumber, the camera silently documented the night's tale. The morning sun brought with it an astonishing revelation: Amidst the vibrant dance of the Northern Lights, the screen revealed Nikaya—her unmistakable silhouette frolicking in the celestial display. It was a sight that defied belief, a moment where the boundaries between worlds seemed to blur. The footage became a story shared by many, resonating across the country and beyond as a testament to her enduring spirit. Nikaya's luminous dance in the Northern Lights became a whisper of the ineffable mysteries that weave through our lives—a gentle affirmation that perhaps the spirits of our cherished companions find solace, their essence twinkling in the starry expanse. In a world where many are consumed by the mundane, her ethereal display is a gentle nudge to look up, to lift our gaze from the screens, and to marvel at the extraordinary that dances above. Her legacy is a portrait of hope and wonder, a reminder that miracles are not elusive spectacles but rather everyday occurrences that grace our lives, waiting to be noticed and cherished. This connection was deeply personal, a unique relationship I cherished both within the clinic and out in the community. I comprehend why Pinehouse holds its elders dear, and they will forever hold a special place in my heart, including Annie and numerous others I encountered during my time there. I am profoundly grateful for this invaluable gift. I recall suggesting to CBC that Annie should share her stories, and I am deeply appreciative of the opportunity to contribute to sharing her legacy. Read More December 25, 2025 at 9:01:38 AM Breaking the Silence: Why We Chase the Light 🌌 People see my photos of the Aurora and they see beauty. But what they don’t always see is the impact. Over and over again, I have sat with youth in the North who have carried weights no child should bear. Repeatedly, I’ve had kids look at me and say the words they were too afraid to tell anyone else—about their struggles, their emotions, and their thoughts of suicide. In many cultures, we are taught to keep those feelings locked away. We are taught that silence is strength. I am here to tell you that silence is a lie. I know this because photography helped me first. It gave me a way to process the world when words weren't enough. Now, I see it happening in Sandy Bay and beyond. When these kids get behind a lens, they aren't just taking a picture; they are finding a way to speak. They are finding a reason to stay. Therapeutic Photography isn't just a hobby for me—it is a lifeline. If it can help me, and if it can help these kids find their voice after years of silence, it can help anyone. This Christmas, I’m in Regina for a moment, but my mission is louder than ever. We will not be silenced. We will keep using the light of the North to pierce the darkness of the unspoken. To the kids who think no one is listening: I see you. The light sees you. Keep holding on. - Finding Happiness Through the Lens
The Inspiring Journey of a Pinehouse Boy from Grief to Hope < Back Finding Happiness Through the Lens Jun 7, 2022 The Inspiring Journey of a Pinehouse Boy from Grief to Hope With the collaboration of young individuals in the community, Dre Erwin, a primary care nurse, crafted a book that serves as a beacon for raising awareness about mental health and suicide in northern Saskatchewan, while highlighting the therapeutic potential of photography. "The Little Boy who Found Happiness, in the Most Unusual Place" soared to the number one spot on Amazon shortly after its release on September 3. Erwin, who has witnessed the profound effects of depression in his role as a nurse in an isolated community, was spurred by the widespread issue and the limited resources available in northern areas. He was inspired to take action, stating, "I felt it was my duty to do more, to find ways to prevent it, and help the youth in other communities." In 2016, Erwin initiated a therapeutic photography club, which proved to be highly beneficial. The positive impact of the club prompted him to embark on writing a book. It was only natural to involve the youth in this project. "The youth wanted something engaging, something like an anime," Erwin said. He collaborated with a ten-year-old from the community who created the lead character, and a dozen more young contributors provided illustrations and photographs used as backgrounds in the book. Erwin's commitment to inclusivity extended to the translation of the story into Cree, thanks to Cree teacher Alfred Tinker from Pinehouse. This addition not only elevates the book's cultural significance but also provides an opportunity for language learning. Erwin's photography page on Facebook caught the attention of a professional editor who generously offered their expertise in editing the book for free. Moreover, Dre Erwin established the Canadian Photo Health Authority, an umbrella organization that has now forged connections across Canada. His vision is to foster better communication and share positive messages through this platform. Erwin is a strong advocate for therapeutic photography, emphasizing that anyone with a cell phone can partake in this therapeutic activity. Through the book, he aims to illustrate how this can be achieved in any community, encouraging individuals to contemplate the emotions and thoughts associated with their photographs and the impact they want to convey to others.
