In the remote wilderness of northern Saskatchewan, life moves at a different pace. As a rural nurse at Pinehouse Lake, I was used to dealing with crises, but nothing could have prepared me for the tragedy that unfolded in my own home.

It began with a strange, collective lethargy. Both my Samoyed husky, Nikaya—my loyal companion through a difficult divorce and a sudden relocation—and I began to weaken. The culprit was a silent killer: a catastrophic environmental failure in our housing that caused severe carbon monoxide poisoning. The medical emergency required us to be airlifted for high-level hospital interventions. We survived, but Nikaya’s body could not endure the damage.

Losing her left a profound void. We buried her on a quiet island across the water from our house, a peaceful sanctuary for a dog who had given me nothing but peace.

Stricken with grief that first night, I pointed my camera toward the island, hoping the night sky might offer some comfort. What the lens captured while I slept defied explanation. When I reviewed the frames the next morning, the Northern Lights had put on a spectacular show. But it wasn't just a solar storm. Right above her grave, the ribbons of green light had perfectly mirrored the shape of a joyful Samoyed, captured mid-stride. The image went viral, but to me, it was simply Nikaya, sending a message from the cosmos that she was finally free.
