Northern Books and Photography Sessions for Schools and Communities

I would love to help more children see northern Saskatchewan in a book, a photograph or a story they create themselves. Schools, libraries and community programs can contact me about book copies, an author session or a practical photography activity.

I am Dre Erwin, a primary care RN(AAP), photographer, author and founder of the Pinehouse Photography Club. These offers connect my northern books with simple creative activities your group can use.

Books for young readers

When the Sky Danced is the first book in my Under the Northern Lights series, intended for ages 4-8. Through Kai's journey, I hope young readers discover curiosity, courage and a little hope under the northern lights.

Publication is being finalized. Availability is anticipated toward the end of October 2026, subject to printed-proof approval, so timing may change. School, library and community enquiries are welcome now; price, stock and shipping will be confirmed before an order.

The Little Boy Who Found Happiness in the Most Unusual Place was created with Pinehouse Photography Club members and is available in English and Cree. Educators should review the story before choosing it for a group; it includes grief following a parent's death by suicide.

Sessions to discuss

Northern stories and an author visit: a 30-45 minute session for early years or primary groups, with an age-appropriate reading when copies are available, questions about the North and a simple drawing or photo prompt.

A new lens on your community: a 60-90 minute session for older children or youth. We practise one camera skill, complete a supervised photo mission, choose an image and offer an optional sharing circle.

Start a photography club: a 60-minute online discussion for educators and community facilitators, with in-person support by arrangement. We review the four stages, equipment options and a first-session plan that a local host can continue.

Designed with your host team

Local educators and community facilitators guide age suitability, cultural context, language needs, accessibility and group supervision. A host stays with the group and manages required permissions and storage. Outdoor activities use an approved daylight route and an indoor alternative.

Sessions are creative learning and reflection opportunities, not psychotherapy or a clinical treatment program. Dates, fees, travel, equipment and any book costs are confirmed by quote and must fit my northern nursing schedule.

Try an activity before arranging a visit

Invite each learner to find something that catches the light, something they appreciate and something that makes them curious. They can take a photo or draw. Ask them to choose one image and give it a title; sharing is optional.

Request a book or workshop quote

Send your organization, contact, community, title and edition or language, approximate book quantity and preferred timing. For a session, include ages, group size, format, accessibility and language needs. I will confirm costs and availability before you commit.
