Get ready to photograph the Northern Lights like a pro with expert tips and tricks from Dre Erwin Photo. Discover the best camera settings, composition techniques, and timing advice to capture this stunning natural phenomenon. From equipment selection to finding the perfect location and predicting aurora activity, this guide has everything you need to know to start your Northern Lights photography adventure. How to Capture the Northern Lights Capturing the Northern Lights is a breathtaking experience that is truly unforgettable. With the right equipment and technique, you can take stunning photos of this natural phenomenon with both a digital camera and a cell phone. In this blog post, we'll walk you through the process of capturing the Northern Lights, including the camera gear required. Camera Gear Required Before we dive into the steps, let's first take a look at the camera gear required for capturing the Northern Lights. Camera: Lens: Tripod: Remote shutter release: You can use a digital camera or a cell phone to capture the Northern Lights. For best results, we recommend using a digital camera that allows you to manually adjust settings such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. A wide-angle lens is essential for capturing the full scope of the Northern Lights. We recommend a lens with a focal length of 10-20mm. To capture clear, sharp images of the Northern Lights, you'll need to keep your camera steady. A sturdy tripod will help you keep your camera stable. Using a remote shutter release will help you avoid camera shake when taking photos, resulting in sharper images. Now that you have your camera gear ready, let's dive into the steps for capturing the Northern Lights. Step 1: Find a Dark Location The first step in capturing the Northern Lights is to find a dark location away from city lights. Look for a spot with a clear view of the sky and minimal light pollution. Step 2: Set Up Your Camera Once you've found a suitable location, set up your camera on your tripod. Attach your wide-angle lens and adjust your camera's settings. Here are some recommended settings: Aperture: f/2.8 to f/4 Shutter speed: 10 to 30 seconds ISO: 800 to 1600 Experiment with different settings to see what works best for the lighting conditions. Step 3: Focus Manually focus your lens to infinity. If your lens has autofocus, switch it to manual focus to avoid it hunting for focus in low light conditions. Step 4: Take the Shot Use a remote shutter release to take the shot. Make sure you're standing still and not touching the camera during the exposure to avoid camera shake. Step 5: Review and Adjust Review your photo and adjust your camera's settings as needed. If the image is too dark, increase your ISO or shutter speed. If it's too bright, decrease your ISO or shutter speed. Check our our videos to learn more! Capturing the Northern Lights with a Cell Phone If you don't have a digital camera, you can still capture the Northern Lights with a cell phone. While the process is similar to using a digital camera, there are some additional considerations: Use the Night mode feature if available Keep the lens clean Avoid using digital zoom Use a tripod or stabilizer if available. Check out our blog for more info! Conclusion Capturing the Northern Lights is an incredible experience, and with the right camera gear and technique, you can take stunning photos that will last a lifetime. Remember to experiment with your camera settings, and don't be afraid to try different angles and compositions. With practice, you'll soon be capturing breathtaking images of this natural wonder. • Dazzling Northern Lights to Shine Brightest in Three Decades, Scientists Predict

A surge in sunspot observations, a significant determinant of this celestial spectacle, has been noted since 2022. < Back Dazzling Northern Lights to Shine Brightest in Three Decades, Scientists Predict Oct 19, 2023 A surge in sunspot observations, a significant determinant of this celestial spectacle, has been noted since 2022. Anticipated to be the most intense in three decades, the northern lights are set to dazzle the night skies with unprecedented brilliance. Scientists are forecasting that if this trend continues, the forthcoming 18 months will usher in the most robust northern lights display seen in years. In the coming 18 months, the northern lights will grace our planet with more frequent and widespread appearances than they have in the past two decades, and the expectation extends even into the next ten years, according to experts interviewed by NBC News. The Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel, an international consortium of scientists backed by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), initially projected a year of sunspot activity below the average, with a peak of 110 to 115 sunspots. However, revised models from multiple scientific sources indicate that sunspots may surge as high as 235. This surge in solar activity is anticipated to be on a steady incline until the autumn of 2024, which is believed to be the prime period for witnessing the northern lights, as confirmed by Mark Miesch, a research scientist affiliated with the University of Colorado Boulder and NOAA. The aurora borealis, renowned as the northern lights, manifests as a natural luminous phenomenon in regions of high latitude, particularly those near the Earth's polar regions. These mesmerizing displays are most frequently observed in countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Canada. Recent sightings of the northern lights extended as far south as Minnesota and Wisconsin. Mark Miesch noted that "when there's a significant disturbance in the magnetic field, there is a higher likelihood of witnessing auroras at lower latitudes." This development is poised to nearly double the chances of encountering the northern lights in the days to come. The northern lights phenomenon is generated by the interaction of charged solar particles with the Earth's magnetosphere, an area significantly influenced by the Earth's magnetic field. This collision results in the emission of energy in the form of luminous particles, forming the breathtaking visual spectacles avidly pursued by sky watchers. Learn more about it here. Previous Next

CBC captures their inspiring journeys, showcasing the profound impact of this innovative therapeutic approach on their mental well-being. How Photography Saved Lives in Pinehouse Lake, Saskatchewan Skylar Lariviere faced despair in the vast forests of northern Saskatchewan, contemplating ending her life. But she found hope and purpose through therapeutic photography, which transformed her perspective. She dropped her weapon, ran towards life, and sought help. In Pinehouse Lake, a community grappling with high youth suicide rates, the Pinehouse Photography Club, founded by primary care nurse Dre Erwin, emerged as a beacon of healing. Photography offered a creative outlet that not only captured the Northern Lights but also ignited a sense of wonder and purpose among its members. As they captured the beauty of Pinehouse through their lenses, they found solace and a way to cope with depression, addiction, and the challenges of remote living. This powerful transformation through therapeutic photography inspired others to follow suit. Teens like Louis Iron discovered the healing power of the camera, using it to navigate the darkness and find light in their lives. As Pinehouse's photography community blossomed, it became clear that this approach was more than a hobby—it was a lifeline. Photography became a bridge to self-esteem and self-worth, allowing these young individuals to communicate their feelings and experiences without words. As Pinehouse's story unfolded, the Pinehouse Photography Club received recognition and grants, setting up a studio space and inspiring similar initiatives nationwide. Today, Pinehouse's photographers continue to capture the beauty of the Northern Lights and their community. Their journey from darkness to light serves as a testament to the transformative power of photography and resilience in the face of adversity. This is the story of hope, healing, and belief—a story that reminds us all that, no matter how low we feel, we can always rise to the top. But the story doesn't end here. The Pinehouse Photography Club is on a mission to extend these opportunities to all Métis and First Nations youth, especially those in the northern and rural parts of the country. Their vision is to offer the same lifeline of creativity, healing, and hope to those who need it most, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of a brighter future. The team was privileged to be invited to community gatherings about the RLP; by participating in these meetings and conducting further interviews with key community members, the team supported the community in identifying research priorities and developing the study’s framework. Pinehouse is heavily invested in the project and will assume leadership all through project implementation. Established in 1987, the RLP is held at a campsite close to the community, from late spring to early fall, with approximately 10 to 15 participants at a time (Joehnck, 2017). Community members provide all-around support in terms of funding, the provision of traditional foods, the facilitation of cultural activities and workshops, and addictions and spiritual counselling. The RLP’s approach to wellness is based on cultural continuity which is described as “traditional intergenerational connectedness, which is maintained through intact families and the engagement of Elders, who pass traditions to subsequent generations” (Loppie Reading & Wien, 2009). The expected participant outcomes centre around generational healing and recovery, with a focus on harm reduction, as opposed to the pursuit of complete sobriety. It is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. 2019 Annual Elders Gathering Originally called "Snake Lake", Pinehouse Lake is predominantly a Métis community in northern Saskatchewan is located in the boreal forest on the western shore of Pinehouse Lake. Located approximately 170 kilometers from the nearest town, the community of Pinehouse is connected to other communities via an all-weather gravel road and local airport. Cree and michif is the mother tongue for most of the residents in this community or village of about 1,500 people. Like many other northern communities, Pinehouse has a very young population, with about 55% under the age of 20. The area has long been a center of trade, the northern part of the lake home to Hudson Bay’s Souris River trading post from 1875-1939. Around the turn of the century, a small group of Aboriginal families from along the Churchill River came together at the settlement where the growing community of Pinehouse now stands. Today, great efforts are being taken to increase successful graduation rates of the young population. An infant daycare also exists in the high school to assist parenting students. There is also a large emphasis on bringing training programs into the community. This has included training and apprentice programs in carpentry, heavy duty mechanics, tourism and hospitality and camp services. Aboriginal medicine wheel and circle of courage healing methodology are included in this programming and high risk students are targeted. Pinehouse residents continue a variety of traditional and cultural activities, including hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering.
