It's been a while since I've shared an update, and I wanted to take a moment to explain why. < Back Life's Unexpected Turns: My Journey Through Injury and Recovery May 4, 2024 Dre Erwin It's been a while since I've shared an update, and I wanted to take a moment to explain why. Recently, I experienced a significant setback when I ruptured my bicep and required urgent surgery. It was a sudden and unexpected turn of events that left me reeling, both physically and emotionally. As someone deeply passionate about photography, facing the prospect of being sidelined from my creative pursuits was incredibly daunting. However, as I navigated through the challenges of surgery and recovery, I found solace and strength in unexpected places. The journey has been anything but easy, but it's also been incredibly enlightening. It's reminded me of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. Through it all, I've discovered a newfound appreciation for the simple moments of beauty that surround us every day. While my photography may have taken a temporary pause, my passion for capturing the essence of life remains unwavering. In fact, this experience has only fueled my determination to return to my craft with renewed vigor and creativity. I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your continued support and encouragement throughout this journey. Your messages of kindness and well wishes have been a source of immense comfort and motivation. As I continue along the path of recovery, I look forward to sharing more of my photography adventures with you in the near future. Until then, let's embrace each moment with gratitude and resilience, knowing that even in our darkest moments, there is always light to guide us forward. With warm regards, Dre Previous Next

- Breaking the Silence: Why We Chase the Light 🌌
People see my photos of the Aurora and they see beauty. But what they don’t always see is the impact. Over and over again, I have sat with youth in the North who have carried weights no child should bear. Repeatedly, I’ve had kids look at me and say the words they were too afraid to tell anyone else—about their struggles, their emotions, and their thoughts of suicide. In many cultures, we are taught to keep those feelings locked away. We are taught that silence is strength. I am here to tell you that silence is a lie. I know this because photography helped me first. It gave me a way to process the world when words weren't enough. Now, I see it happening in Sandy Bay and beyond. When these kids get behind a lens, they aren't just taking a picture; they are finding a way to speak. They are finding a reason to stay. Therapeutic Photography isn't just a hobby for me—it is a lifeline. If it can help me, and if it can help these kids find their voice after years of silence, it can help anyone. This Christmas, I’m in Regina for a moment, but my mission is louder than ever. We will not be silenced. We will keep using the light of the North to pierce the darkness of the unspoken. To the kids who think no one is listening: I see you. The light sees you. Keep holding on. < Back Breaking the Silence: Why We Chase the Light 🌌 Dec 25, 2025 People see my photos of the Aurora and they see beauty. But what they don’t always see is the impact. Therapeutic photography is the use of photography as a tool to promote healing, self-discovery, and personal growth. It involves the use of images to explore and express one's emotions, thoughts, and feelings, as well as to gain insight into one's life experiences. < Back Therapeutic Photography Therapeutic photography is the use of photography as a tool to promote healing, self-discovery, and personal growth. It involves the use of images to explore and express one's emotions, thoughts, and feelings, as well as to gain insight into one's life experiences. Therapeutic photography finds application in diverse settings, including counseling, psychotherapy, and self-help. It offers valuable support to individuals grappling with mental health challenges, trauma, grief, and more. Through the process of capturing and reflecting upon images, individuals gain fresh perspectives on their emotions and experiences, thereby discovering effective coping strategies to move forward. Moreover, the therapeutic power of photography extends beyond personal benefits. It fosters social connections and community bonds. Group photography initiatives, for instance, serve as a unifying force, celebrating culture, belonging, and mutual support. When it comes to aiding youth in self-expression and emotion processing, therapeutic photography stands out as an effective tool. Especially for those who struggle with verbal communication or sharing mental health concerns, this form of expression provides a safe and creative outlet. Youth can develop essential coping skills and enhance their well-being. The widespread availability of cameras on smartphones and other devices makes this therapy particularly accessible to young people. In 2016, Dre uncovered the therapeutic potential of northern lights photography. He introduced this form of therapy in a remote northern Saskatchewan village to assist youth in developing coping mechanisms for mental health challenges and addictions. Dre's experience vividly highlights the empowering and accessible nature of therapeutic photography. It proves especially significant for youth mental health and addictions, making it a feasible tool for implementation in various settings, be it in homes, communities, schools, or towns. The only prerequisite is a cellphone or camera. In addition to verbal feedback from youth, Dre observed the positive impact of therapeutic photography on their behavior and emotions. Smiles, laughter, and emotional expression during spontaneous group therapy sessions around a campfire served as tangible evidence of its effectiveness. Furthermore, recognition from reputable sources like CBC, Global News, the Union of Nurses, and national/global outlets reaffirmed the tool's value. Irrespective of who you are or where you find yourself, we encourage you to explore the benefits of therapeutic photography, whether individually or with others, even in the absence of apparent issues. Initially situated downstream on the Churchill River, its relocation was encouraged near the future site of the Island Falls Generating Station, eventually altering traditional lifestyles and shaping the community's growth. The transformation continued as the Island Falls Generating Station reshaped the region, leading to Sandy Bay's establishment as a Local Community Authority in 1965. However, with the station's switch to an automated system in 1966, employment opportunities dwindled. Subsequent developments, like the introduction of an all-weather road in 1967 and the designation as a northern village in the 1980s, brought necessary services but also shifted the community's economic focus toward tourism. Today, SaskPower oversees the dam's operations, now entirely automated. While the community sustains a local store, residents often access additional supplies and groceries in Flin Flon, Manitoba, reachable via a two-hour drive along gravel and paved highways.
