Sask Aurora: Why Your Apps are Lying to You

For a Sask aurora outing, check the current aurora forecast, local cloud cover and darkness before deciding where to go. An app alert is a clue, not a promise of a visible display. Start with NOAA’s aurora dashboard and check its timestamps. The screenshot above is an example of forecast information, not tonight’s live conditions.

1. Kp Is One Clue, Not the Whole Forecast

Kp is a useful measure of geomagnetic activity over a three-hour interval, but it cannot promise what you will see from one Saskatchewan location. Bz describes the north–south direction of the solar wind’s magnetic field; sustained southward conditions favour energy transfer into Earth’s magnetosphere. 2. Regina vs. The Real North

I live in Regina and work in northern Saskatchewan. Getting away from city glow helps with faint displays, but Sandy Bay and Pinehouse Lake do not guarantee an overhead show. 3. The Night Shift Advantage
