Initially situated downstream on the Churchill River, its relocation was encouraged near the future site of the Island Falls Generating Station, eventually altering traditional lifestyles and shaping the community's growth. The transformation continued as the Island Falls Generating Station reshaped the region, leading to Sandy Bay's establishment as a Local Community Authority in 1965. However, with the station's switch to an automated system in 1966, employment opportunities dwindled. Subsequent developments, like the introduction of an all-weather road in 1967 and the designation as a northern village in the 1980s, brought necessary services but also shifted the community's economic focus toward tourism. Today, SaskPower oversees the dam's operations, now entirely automated. While the community sustains a local store, residents often access additional supplies and groceries in Flin Flon, Manitoba, reachable via a two-hour drive along gravel and paved highways. • Life is Like a Camera...

Focus on what's important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don't work out, take another shot. < Back Life is Like a Camera... Dec 28, 2023 Dre Erwin Focus on what's important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don't work out, take another shot. What you focus on expands, so aim your lens towards the positivity you seek, and watch how it shapes the picture of your life. This metaphor compares life to using a camera. It suggests that in life, one should concentrate on what truly matters, cherish the positive moments, learn from the challenging ones (the negatives), and if circumstances don't go as planned, try again just like taking another shot with a camera. The phrase "What you focus on expands" implies that where you direct your attention or energy tends to grow or become more prominent in your life. Therefore, the advice is to focus on the positive aspects you desire because that focus influences and shapes the overall quality and direction of your life. • CBC: Finding Perspective and Mental Wellness Through Photography

CBC features Cheryl West’s drone photography and mental health journey, with insights from Dre Erwin and the Pinehouse Photography Club. < Back CBC: Finding Perspective and Mental Wellness Through Photography Oct 12, 2026 Dre Erwin CBC features Cheryl West’s drone photography and mental health journey, with insights from Dre Erwin and the Pinehouse Photography Club. A new CBC Saskatchewan story highlights how Cheryl West of Grenfell has found connection and support for her mental health through drone photography. Cheryl and her husband Kirk Lee share videos of rural Saskatchewan, revealing the beauty of familiar places from a different perspective. I was glad to contribute my perspective to the story as a photographer, primary care nurse and founder of the Pinehouse Photography Club. Working with youth in northern Saskatchewan has shown me how photography can help people slow down, focus on what’s around them and connect with others. What I like most about Cheryl’s experience is that you don’t need a fancy camera or a photography club to begin. Sometimes a phone, a walk and the willingness to notice something beautiful are enough to get started. May 19, 2026 Dre Erwin If a crown corporation won't step up to help northern youth mental health with their leftover tech, we'll do it ourselves. I asked SaskTel for a donation of used/retired smartphones for our youth therapeutic photography program in Sandy Bay. Because of corporate bureaucracy, they turned us down. Recently, I experienced a significant setback when I ruptured my bicep and required urgent surgery. It was a sudden and unexpected turn of events that left me reeling, both physically and emotionally. As someone deeply passionate about photography, facing the prospect of being sidelined from my creative pursuits was incredibly daunting. However, as I navigated through the challenges of surgery and recovery, I found solace and strength in unexpected places. The journey has been anything but easy, but it's also been incredibly enlightening. It's reminded me of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. Through it all, I've discovered a newfound appreciation for the simple moments of beauty that surround us every day. While my photography may have taken a temporary pause, my passion for capturing the essence of life remains unwavering. In fact, this experience has only fueled my determination to return to my craft with renewed vigor and creativity. I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your continued support and encouragement throughout this journey. • Dazzling Northern Lights to Shine Brightest in Three Decades, Scientists Predict

A surge in sunspot observations, a significant determinant of this celestial spectacle, has been noted since 2022. < Back Dazzling Northern Lights to Shine Brightest in Three Decades, Scientists Predict Oct 19, 2023 A surge in sunspot observations, a significant determinant of this celestial spectacle, has been noted since 2022. Anticipated to be the most intense in three decades, the northern lights are set to dazzle the night skies with unprecedented brilliance. Scientists are forecasting that if this trend continues, the forthcoming 18 months will usher in the most robust northern lights display seen in years. In the coming 18 months, the northern lights will grace our planet with more frequent and widespread appearances than they have in the past two decades, and the expectation extends even into the next ten years, according to experts interviewed by NBC News. The Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel, an international consortium of scientists backed by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), initially projected a year of sunspot activity below the average, with a peak of 110 to 115 sunspots. However, revised models from multiple scientific sources indicate that sunspots may surge as high as 235. This surge in solar activity is anticipated to be on a steady incline until the autumn of 2024, which is believed to be the prime period for witnessing the northern lights, as confirmed by Mark Miesch, a research scientist affiliated with the University of Colorado Boulder and NOAA. The aurora borealis, renowned as the northern lights, manifests as a natural luminous phenomenon in regions of high latitude, particularly those near the Earth's polar regions. These mesmerizing displays are most frequently observed in countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Canada. Recent sightings of the northern lights extended as far south as Minnesota and Wisconsin. Mark Miesch noted that "when there's a significant disturbance in the magnetic field, there is a higher likelihood of witnessing auroras at lower latitudes." This development is poised to nearly double the chances of encountering the northern lights in the days to come. The northern lights phenomenon is generated by the interaction of charged solar particles with the Earth's magnetosphere, an area significantly influenced by the Earth's magnetic field. This collision results in the emission of energy in the form of luminous particles, forming the breathtaking visual spectacles avidly pursued by sky watchers. Learn more about it here.
